Pervert touched girl, six, at a party

A CONVICTED paedophile who sexually assaulted a six-year-old Burton girl has been jailed for 25 months.

Barry Thompson touched the girl over her clothing at a party and then whispered to her to ‘keep her mouth shut’, Stafford Crown Court heard.

At the time of the offence, Thompson was breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) imposed in 2008 for a previous sexual offence on a teenage girl in Burton.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones branded him ‘a danger to young girls’.

Thompson, 45, of Goodman Street, Burton, admitted charges of sexual assault and a breach of the SOPO.

The court heard it was the defendant’s third sexual offence against children.

He was convicted in April 2006 of sexual activity in the presence of a child and of a similar offence in April 2008, when he was jailed for 16 months.

Judge Trevor-Jones said: “Each of these cases involves young girls.

“Before it had been teenagers, now it’s a girl as young as six — it is hard to think of a more vulnerable victim.

“This was quite calculated on your part.

“You do amount to a danger to young girls, given the pattern of offending and the escalation of it.”

Along with the jail sentence, the judge imposed a new SOPO banning Thompson from being alone with children for the next 10 years.

Thompson was also ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Pat Sullivan, prosecuting, said the assault on the six-year-old happened at a party, but the breach of the order involved Thompson being left alone with three other children while their mother went out to the shops.

Catherine O’Reilly, defending, said Thompson had only been alone with the children for a few minutes and no physical harm had come to them.

She said: “He is ashamed of his behaviour and expresses remorse to the child and her parents.”
